Types of Flea Medication to Consider Using
Many pet owners worldwide experience the same problem, and it is fleas. Whether you own a cat or a dog, these creatures are not actually picky on their target. Being able to treat your pets for these pesky creatures and controlling them as well the moment they’ve been eradicated is crucial in keeping your pet and your house safe from the presence of these nasty parasites.
There are host of medications and also, medication methods you can choose from and a lot of pet owners are puzzled on how they can choose the best one. The first step that has to be done is to familiarize yourself with the types of flea pet medications that can be bought in the market and know how this works in regulating pests. Basically, there are 3 major categories for such products and these are collars, topical and oral medicines.
Flea Collars – as a matter of fact, this was the very first flea control product available to regulate fleas. It was introduced first in 1964 and decades had past, collars stayed to be the sole way to control fleas. Though today, they are still a very popular choice because they are seen to be harmless.
On the other hand, its effectiveness is being criticized by some. Flea collars are working slowly by releasing a minimal amount of chemical that spreads gradually across the fur of your pet. As you can imagine, the area that’s closest to the collar is getting the most protection while the ones far from it are getting the least.
Flea Topicals – many are considering that the invention of topical products in flea medicines are major breakthrough. These are basically liquid pet meds that are being applied with a couple of drops to the back of your pet. Topicals are quite popular as what’s been illustrated by popular and leading companies.
Topicals however when used on its own may not be enough in controlling pest problems; they work better when it is combined with chemicals such as methoprene which are applied to where your pet goes often. This is going to prevent adult parasites in your pet in growing to the next stage. In order to use topical, make sure that your vet has given you prescription for such. Once you have the prescription, you can buy it OTC so restocking it won’t be a problem.
Oral Flea Medicines – flea medications come in liquid form or pill and this works inside out. It is allowing pesticides to come through your pet’s skin to kill ticks and fleas. Using this flea medicine however should be done in moderation because believe it or not, a dose of it is enough to last for the following days.
